Day Twenty Three
Utah is incredible.
After a chilly night in Kaibab National Forest we head out towards Bryce Canyon. We grab breakfast in Kanab, UT at an awesome little diner. We’re all really getting into a rhythm with morning breakfast followed by big mileage session. It’s workin’.
On our way to Bryce we pass through Red Canyon. It’s just a taste of what we’re about to see. The weathered red pillars could easily be at home in some remote Martian scifi landscape. They might even be since Kanab is also known as Utah’s “Little Hollywood”.
As we continue on, we approach the park entrance gates and all get our wallets in order. Not today, the nice park worker tells us. First day of summer and all national parks are free of charge. Bonus.
Half of us decide that Bryce Canyon deserves some helmetless cruising. The main “amphitheater” rock formations in Bryce Canyon are absolutely mind blowing. So much so, that we even decide to hike to the bottom of one of the areas to get a better perspective on the size. They are huge.
We finish up at Bryce and head towards our campgrounds. Little did we know that our prospective site at 10,000 ft elevation was still covered in snow. We scrap that plan and move to lower grounds. We get to Navajo Lake campgrounds outside Zion National Park. The small, spring fed lake and site are perfect. Even though we’ve come down at least 2,000 ft, there’s still some white winter remains on the ground. Perfect for keeping the beer cold.
We call lights out and get our rest for Zion in the morning.
